Sad news. Jack Layton, one of the most charismatic and galvanizing politicians Canada has ever known, has passed away. Here is a short appreciation of Jack, one of literally thousands that will no doubt surface today and in the weeks to come.

I first met Jack when I asked him to host an evening with Eldridge Cleaver, Abbie Hoffman, and Timothy Leary. It was the only time these three had been in the same room together. Jack was great. Afterwards we all went to dinner and stayed up until 4 am, talking. Our paths crossed many more times over the years and I always loved his intelligence, passion, and genuine warmth. Jack made Canada a better place. He will be missed.
